Jim is Mike Pryce's stepfather. He is quite a handsome fella. Square jaw, full head of hair,
perfect teeth, and intelligent to boot. As his wife, Joan's dementia grows worse, Jim feels
increasingly trapped in his marriage as his spouse morphs from a voluptuous and witty woman
to a doddering old lady in the course of a few short years. Everything he wanted from his life
and his new marriage has been stolen from him, but he can't divorce her or cheat on her
without looking like a monster. He is horrified at the prospect of spending the rest of his life
bound to an obese ghost who looks a little like his wife, and he often takes out his frustration
on his stepson, Mike. Despite many conflicts, Jim's affection for Mike is genuine and his
main reason for sticking with his marriage is to see Mike safely off to college.
